Primary events

Secondary circumstances

  • Occupation: John was a solicitor.
  • Association: He and Joseph Sewell were associated in 1812 in Norfolk, England. There seems to have been a business relationship between these 2 men, both solicitors. John was from Norwich and Joseph from Catton.
  • Association: John Blake and John Joseph Blake were associated in 1835 in Norwich, Norfolk, England; The firm of solicitors named as BLAKE, SEWELL, KEITH and BLAKE included these 2 men. The other partners were Joseph SEWELL and Thomas MOre KEITH.

Census details

  • John was named first in the census taken on the night of 6th June 1841. Others in the house included Sophia Read, but no relationships were recorded in this census. The address was Bramerton, Norfolk, England. He was aged 65 years.. With John BLAKE aged 9 and Henry BLAKE aged 7 and a clergyman Richard EATON aged 50. And 6 servants.
  • In the census taken on the night of 30th March 1851, John was the head of the household. The address was Bramerton, England. The address does not say Bramerton Hall, but this is census form #1 for the parish, and it may be assumed that the census taker started with the most important house in the area. With John and Sophia is Susannah BLAKE an unmarried granddaughter of 20 who is a gentlewoman, a Richard READ a widowed coachman of 41 who may be a relative of Sophia's, William Aston BLAKE a grandson, then a gardener, a footman, an upper maid, a cook, a housemaid and the bailiff who was in charge of the 220 acre farm attached to this dwelling..
Some aspects of John Blake's life. John was the executor of the will of Mary HOBART - This is the last will and testament of me Mary Hobart of Catton widow. First I appoint my dear brother Sir William BEAUCHAMP Proctor of Langley Park in Norfolk Baronet and my friend Mr John BLAKE of Norwich solicitor executors of this my will. And I give to my dear niece Mary Anne BEAUCHAMP now the wife of John Jocelyn FORSYTHE Esq the French work box which was given to me by her dear mother. To the three sisters of my said niece I give in 3 equal shares all the Chrystal they brought me from abroad being the prettiest things I have and which I hope they will keep in remembrance of me. To my sister in law Lady Beauchamp I leave my little purple leather work box lined with blue satin which besides other little matters contains a gold thimble given to me by my father. And I also bequeath to her the high desk with drawers in the little room which was given to me by herself. And I bequeath to my sister Emily Wodehouse the two china jars standing on brackets on each side of the door in the drawing room leading to the little room. And also her own portrait over the fire place and the stool with the bird worked upon it by herself and which she gave to me. And I bequeath all the miniatures with other pictures and prints except the ones above given to my sister Emily Wodehouse and except those which have names at the back of the frames thereof and which are the property of and to be delivered to the persons whose names they so bear unto my son Charles Robert HOBART. And I bequeath all my trinkets and g?????? necklaces ear rings and broach and my alabaster vase with doves in the drawing room unto my said son. And with regard to my general wearing apparel and wearing linen I wish them to be divided as equally as possible between my former servants Mary SHORTEN of Poringland and Rachel SHORTEN who keeps the Bull Inn in Norwich and Ellen QUANTRELL who is my servant at the present time and I give and bequeath the same to them accordingly but with respect to my shawls, gown pieces and all things in drawers I give and bequeath to my daughter-in-law Maria HOBART the wife of my son Charles Robert HOBART and all the rest residue and remainder of the money goods chattels and personal estate which I have the power to dispose of and not hereinafter bequeathed I give and bequeath unto my said son for his own use and benefit. And I leave it as my most particular request that not the least display be made at my funeral but that I be quietly buried in a brick grave on the north side of Langley Churchyard but not close to the church nor to the planatations but in the open part of the churchyard.

Made 18th Day of April 1854. Mary died 5th May 1854 and the Will was proved on the 26th August 1854. Mary’s estate was valued at under £450, so was substantial for the time in that it did not include any real estate.

Some aspects of John Blake's life. The firm of solicitors styled Sewell, Blake, Keith and Blake get a mention in Hansard as follows: IPSWICH ELECTION—BREACH OF PRIVILEGE.
HC Deb 22 July 1835 vol 29 cc870-85

My summation of the story is that there was a charge of fraudulent practices and bribery in the above election. One material witness who was due to appear before the select committee was John PILGRIM, who was well acquainted with John BLAKE and Joseph SEWELL, as least in the course of business, all being solicitors and having co-signed documents. Thomas More KEITH aided and abetted the continued absence of John PILGRIM, by charging Mr PILGRIM with embezzlement, thereby giving him an excuse to go into hiding. The BLAKE and SEWELL part of the partnership were absolved from complicity

Anecdote - Musings and Reasonings

Research note (complicated): letter sent to a fellow researcher -
This is my 'research diary'.

FIRST IDEA - John BLAKE born c 1776 in Norwich (not confirmed) was a solicitor. As such there should be education records - say a university.

I found http://www.british-history.ac.uk/search?query=blake&title=Alumni%20Oxonienses%201500-1714. This is Oxford Alumni up to 1714. Obviously too early but worth a look. I am seeking anyone with a given name that appears in any of John's children. Also looking for any reference to the names you supplied, and to Ireland.

Morphed into I FOUND THIS....

Blake, Zachariah      s. Z(achary), of parish of St. Clement Danes, Middlesex, pleb. Christ Church, matric. 10 Oct., 1707, aged 16; B.A. 1712, M.A. 1716, born 4 May, 1692, entered Merchant Taylors' School in 1702, rector of Goldsborough, Yorks, 1717. See Foster's Index Ecclesiasticus & Robinson, ii. 8.

This is obviously your Zac b 1692. It says he was a vicar

I checked Goldsborough church site

http://db.theclergydatabase.org.uk/jsp/locations/DisplayLocation.jsp?locKey=5837

This shows Zachariah as vicar in 1717.

He died there in 1757

Were you aware that Zachariah 1692 was the Vicar of Goldsborough?

It may be worth contacting the current Vicar to see what they have on record. It was/is normal for very detailed records of past vicars to be kept in the church. Sometimes on paper and sometimes chiselled into the walls.

What you are really after is proof he did or did NOT have a child named John around 1723. Finding out if he was married, and when and where, would be a good starting point.

There is a record of a Zachariah BLAKE marrying Elizabeth TOLLETT by Licence 27th April 1721 in St Margaret's Westminster.

Image attached to email

If we can find the Licence there will be more info. Confusingly, there is a licence on file for a Zacharia BLAKE and Mary HATCHMAN dated July 31st 1721, but no image. Either or neither could be the one we are looking for, but the name used when Zachariah and Mary married was BLACK.

This MUST SURELY by your older Zacharia, even though his last name is NOT recorded. Supporting info is the birth of what I believe is the younger Zachariah, mother named as Mary. Note though this birth is years before the marriage. Original records should be very carefully checked to see if there was a transcription or other error.

This is obviously NOT the one who was the Vicar of Goldsborough - BUT he could be a grandson, so well worth looking at John and Elizabeth's family. I searched parental names and location LONDON, so if they had family elsewhere they are not included.

This appears to be 2 different families, but the 2 John's could be cousins (both had children named Zachariah). I have not isolated either marriage.

I will leave this here. I know there is a lot left undone, but I want to feed this back to you for your thoughts.

Once you have digested all this, and worked out what (if any) lines to follow up, please let me know what you find, and what further help I can be.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: a Mehetabel BLAKE, the niece of John, was married in Cotym, Travencore, India to Rev John CHAPMAN Fellow Of St John's College Cambridge..
  • Research note 02: There are a number of BLAKE burials in the bramerton register. Whoever compiled the register has added relationships using the registered number as references, but some of those referenced as relatives do not show up in the results when searching for BLAKE burials in Bramerton. I need to access free bmd to see if I can identify those missing deaths in Heanstead..
  • Research note 04: John had a grandson named John Henry BLAKE of Norwich who was born in 1862 and who died in 1871. He is buried in Bramerton.
  • Research note 05: John owned land in Magpie Hall Lane in Bromley, so therefore may be connected in some way to the Barnabas BLAKES.7
