  • Research note 01: Robert appears to have signed up for the army in 1914, at the age of 50. He was a brickmaker by trade, and had been in the services before, as he was an R G A Pensioner. He was also married.
    He was still in the army in 1920. His home address was 22 Berkley Road, Southsea, Portsmouth. HIs wife's name was Margaret CROWLEY of 20 Cottage Lane, Somers Road, Southsea. They were married 4th Oct 1899 in St John's Portsea, and they had 3 children Robert, Ernest and Mary, 1904, 1909 and 1912. Place of birth for at least one child was Gibraltar. There was another son, William, who died July 1906
    Robert was tattooed on both thighs, and was a Roman Catholic.
    Robert's previous service began in 1884, and ended 1910, and he was still alive in 1929.
