Military Career

Records show that Launcelot Arthur Cleveland served in the armed forces. Served in Boer War WW1 as a Captain. He had a brother Kenneth Arthur. He was Hon Lt, and then an Hon Capt.

He joined C Company in 1896, and was released for service in the Boer War.

When he signed on for WW! he was still single, with a business address Broken Hill Chambers, 31 Queen Street, Melbourne. His father (Arthur William) was still alive, and at the same address in Queen Street.

His Boer War service is detailed in the WW1 attestment papers. Seconded as Lieutenant to Rhodesian Field Force Artillery in July 1900, Appointed to command NZ section Pom Pom, Promoted Captain in Nov 1901. Served until after declaration of peace.

In WW1 he was awarded the MC (3rd Sep 1916, Gazetted 29th Dec 1916).

He was in Suez in Nov 1915 (so he missed Galipoli), in France in time to get the MC, and was demobbed in 1919. After this he remained with the Army (possibly part time?) until 1933, when his papers say he was placed on the Retired list with permission to retain his rank.
