Census details

Some aspects of Margaret Elizabeth Brackenbury's life. I have just discovered the details of Margaret's husband Christopher Beales' death at sea in 1894. I had him as 'presumed dead' as Margaret was a widow in 1901. Well - there was a storm over the whole of England around 22nd Dec 1894. Many reports in the papers. Christopher was on the fishing smack Teazer, which was lost with all 6 hands. No wreck was found and none of the bodies. His son Chris would have been around 7 at the time, and Margaret nee BRACKENBURY was 3 month pregnant. There were 4 other children as well. Margaret was living at 15 Row 23 in 1901, and she was still there until she went to the workhouse some time before she died. For those people who have an interest in the Yarmouth Rows' there is an alternative name for Row 23 - North Howard Street. Or maybe Row 23 was just close to North Howard Street. There are plenty of stories, pictures and maps on the web if you search for the address.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: William S BLYTHE was present at Margaret's death. She died in the workhouse, as William Blythe was the manager of the workhouse at 150a Caister Road. Certificates were issued without saying 'WORKHOUSE' to protect the reputation of those who were confined or assisted. On the certificate it says her dead husband's name was Christopher Elijah who was actually her son. Christopher Elijah was NOT a fisherman either, which supports the theory that the informant did not really know much about Margaret and her family..
