Some aspects of Alice Constance Alderton's life. These 2 ladies are cousins; our common ancestors are Michael and Elizabeth YULL .

Anna Elizabeth ALDERTON was born in Cressingham in 1859.

She was at home with her parents for 1861 and 1871 census.

I know she is NOT the woman in the Norfolk Workhouse in 1881. I think she is the Ann E ALDERTON (Middle initial transcribed as C, but could just as easily be E when you look closely at the census form).

She is the only servant to Harriet ALLEN a widow, who is living with her married daughter Catherine REYNOLDS and her husband John (a medical man who is not practicing).

Anna became pregnant a couple of months after the census. Her daughter Alice Constance ALDERTON was born 5th March 1882.

By 1891 Anna was the housekeeper to a retired widowed Naval Captain, a job she was still in in 1911. In 1891 there were 5 children (youngest 10), with only 1 left in 1911.

The illegitimate daughter Alice was schooled in Great Cressingham 1887-1895, where her 'parent' was listed as her mother Anna. Anna was in London for most of this time.

For the 1891 and 1901 census Alice was living with her grandfather and sundry aunts/uncles ALDERTON in Great Cressingham.

In 1910 she married William BIRD in Islington. The marriage is listed in Ancestry, and I must be on my last day with Ancestry as I was able to get the certificate.

The groom (William BIRD) was from Norfolk, and the bride gave a London address - 5 Lucas Street, Islington. She said her father was Arthur ALDERTON a deceased carpenter, but I believe this is untrue. I was rather hoping that an ALDERTON would be a witness, but no such luck.

Taking all the info to hand, I believe I have the correct story here....

In 1911 Alice is with her Father in law and her husband in Grimstone Norfolk. There were no children yet.

I think there were 2 children born to Alice and William, both in Freebridge Lynn. Dorothy A M BIRD 1911 and Margery A BIRD 1914. There are too many BIRD women born around this time to follow up looking for marriages etc. I can say neither died young in Freebridge Lynn.

The next time these 2 turn up in the records is 1939. There are a couple of discrepancies which I may be able to clear up once I get a look at the 1939 rego papers.

In 1939 they are the only 2 registered as part of the BIRD family in Watford. The transcription reads - As Annie E ALDERTON born 1889, and Alice C BIRD. Annie's name is slightly wrong, and her date of birth us 30 years out, but as they are together with the names ALDERTON and BIRD, I am pretty sure.

And now for why I went to all this trouble......

These 2 ladies died within a few months of each other in Watford 1963. Alice BIRD was 80, and her mother was ------ 104.

By the numbers in the index, the daughter died just before her mother.
