Census details

Some aspects of Christopher Elijah Charles Beales's life. Fire in Row 28 - It was just before midnight on a cold December night in 1912 when a fatal fire occurred in the house known as No. 2 Angell's Passage, off Row 29, North Quay, resulting in the death of two children, William GOFFIN aged 5 and Eleanor Goffin aged 4. Their father Herbert GOFFIN had earlier put the children to bed, and left the house to play the piano in the Great Eastern Public House.

The story goes on to say Mrs GOFFIN and the lodger, with whom she was somewhat too familiar, had quarrelled, and a lamp had upturned and started the fire. Mrs GOFFIN was able to save one of her 3 children, but not the others.

The fire quickly engulfed the row house. Mrs GOFFIN was shrieking 'Save my Children'. A witness says he saw 3 or 4 people on a roof attached to the house making an effort to get into the top room where the children were. One, a man named BEALES did get in, but was compelled to return very quickly because of the heat and the smoke.

Christopher BEALES, labourer, of Row 23, said when in North Howard Street he heard of the fire and went to the spot. When he reached the house, the fire was very nigh through it. He heard there were 2 children inside, and tried to run through the house, but the flames were too much and he had to turn back. He then went on to the washhouse roof and entered the bedroom window, he felt the bed but there was no one in it, then he felt the floor. The room was full of smoke. He tried to get into the other bedroom, but fell half way through the floor.

The above is a small part of the full story of the inquest into the deaths.7
