Brushes with the LAW

In 1898 Eliza and Arthur were charged with neglecting a child, but were both found not guilty. A child of theirs had died of starvation at the age of 4 months, after being fed baked flour and water (which was said to be a common practise in Yarmouth at the time, even though this was known to be bad for children). William had no case to answer (as the judge believed he could not have known of the child's emaciated condition as, being the father, would only have seen the child's face!!). Eliza was having issues with drink, and had indeed been drinking with friends on the day the child died. She had been in and out of the house during the day according to her eldest daughter who was 11. The judge stated that there was no sign of neglect (other than the inappropriate food) on the child, and the jury found her not guilty.4
